BMKG: Shallow Earthquake Strikes Gayo Lues, Aceh on Sunday Morning

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake struck Gayo Lues, Aceh Province, on Sunday (22/2) at 04:05:10 local time (WIB), caused by activity along the Oreng segment of the Great Sumatran Fault.

"Analysis shows that the earthquake measured Magnitude 4.2," said Head of the BMKG Regional Office I, Hendro Nugroho, in Medan, North Sumatra, on Sunday.

He explained that the epicentre was located at coordinates 4.26 degrees North Latitude and 97.56 degrees East Longitude, precisely on land approximately 39 kilometres northeast of Gayo Lues Regency at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Based on community reports, the earthquake was felt in Gayo Lues at an intensity of II–III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, and in Bener Meriah at an intensity of II MMI.

However, no reports of structural damage resulting from the earthquake have been received to date.
