BMKG: Several Indonesian Cities Could See Heavy Rain
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged the public to be alert to the possibility of moderate to heavy rain in several parts of Indonesia on Thursday.
According to BMKG’s weather forecast, thunderstorms are expected in a number of cities, including Padang, Jambi, Tanjung Pinang, Bengkulu and Jakarta.
“Meanwhile, light rain is possible in various areas of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua,” BMKG forecaster Lintang said in a regular broadcast monitored from Jakarta.
BMKG said a cyclonic circulation forming in waters north of Aceh was causing areas of wind convergence and deceleration in waters north of Aceh, the northern Strait of Malacca and areas around the circulation.
These atmospheric conditions may support the growth of rain clouds, increasing the likelihood of rainfall in surrounding areas.
In Sumatra, light rain is forecast in Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Palembang, Pangkalpinang and Bandar Lampung.
On Java, Bali and the Nusa Tenggara islands, light rain is forecast in Serang, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta and Denpasar. Mataram and Kupang are expected to be cloudy, while Surabaya may experience haze.
In Sulawesi, light rain is possible in Mamuju. Makassar, Palu and Manado are forecast to be heavily cloudy, while smoke or fog is possible in Gorontalo and haze in Kendari.
In eastern Indonesia, light rain is possible in Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayawijaya and Merauke. Ternate is forecast to be heavily cloudy, while Jayapura may experience haze.
At sea, BMKG said waves of 1.25 to 2.5 metres may occur in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, waters south of Banten through East Nusa Tenggara, the Bali Sea, the Maluku Sea, and the northern Pacific Ocean off Maluku and Papua.
Fishers and sea transport users were asked to check changing weather and wave conditions before sailing.
BMKG urged the public to adapt their daily activities to local weather and remain alert to rain that may occur locally.
