BMKG Reveals Timing of Total Solar Eclipse on 12 August Passing Indonesia

A total solar eclipse will occur on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. However, the phenomenon cannot be observed from Indonesia.

This is because the eclipse path does not pass through Indonesian territory and its phases take place while Indonesia is on the night side of the Earth.

Director of Engineering Seismology, Potential Geophysics and Time Signals at BMKG, Teguh Rahayu, explained that people in Europe, northern Russia, north-western Africa and North America are the regions that will have the opportunity to witness this astronomical phenomenon directly.

“For Indonesians who wish to watch the total solar eclipse, they can follow it through NASA’s official channels,” said Ayu in a written statement from BMKG on Monday (10/8/2026).

Furthermore, this global-scale phenomenon begins with the partial eclipse phase (P1) at 22:34 WIB, enters the total eclipse phase at the initial location (U1) at 23:57 WIB, and reaches its peak at 00:45 WIB on 13 August 2026. The entire eclipse process ends completely at 02:57 WIB on 13 August 2026.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned in a straight line during the New Moon phase.

At its peak, the Moon’s disc completely covers the Sun’s disc from the Earth’s perspective, turning daytime into darkness for several moments in areas crossed by the path of the core shadow (umbra).

Meanwhile, areas crossed only by the faint shadow or penumbra will witness the phenomenon as a partial solar eclipse.

BMKG also reminded people at observation locations not to look directly at the Sun without protection, and to use special solar-filter glasses to protect eye safety.
