Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake in the South Sea off Sukabumi, West Java this morning on 13 March 2026 at 02:18 WIB. According to the BMKG, the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 posed no tsunami threat, though tremors were felt widely across Jakarta and Banten regions.

Based on BMKG’s analysis, the epicentre of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.04° South Latitude and 106.86° East Longitude. The precise location was at sea, approximately 121 kilometres south-east of Sukabumi Regency, with the hypocenter depth reaching 53 kilometres.

Acting Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, Rahmat Triyono, explained that given the epicentre location and depth, the earthquake was classified as a shallow earthquake. “The quake was triggered by subduction zone plate activity. The source mechanism analysis indicates the earthquake exhibits a strike-slip or lateral movement mechanism,” Rahmat stated in his official statement on Friday (13/3).

Earthquake tremors were felt across numerous areas with varying intensities according to the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale.

As of the time of reporting, BMKG had not detected any aftershocks up to 02:50 WIB. The public was advised to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified claims or rumours.

Recent seismic activity in Indonesia has included a magnitude 5.4 earthquake centred in Sukabumi at a depth of 43 kilometres, which also posed no tsunami threat. BMKG recorded at least 20 earthquakes ranging from magnitude 2.1 to 4.1 across various Indonesian regions on Tuesday (10/3) in the early morning hours. The Sukabumi earthquake was located at coordinates 7.62° South Latitude and 106.41° East Longitude, approximately 71 kilometres south-west of Sukabumi Regency, or roughly 26 kilometres out to sea. A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck 94 kilometres south-east of Simeulue Regency on Monday, 3 March 2026, at 11:56:45 WIB. A magnitude 5.0 earthquake also struck the north-west region of West Southwest Maluku Regency, Maluku Province, on Tuesday at 00:40 WIB.
