BMKG Records 7,492 Aftershocks in NTT

Aftershocks continue to shake the region of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded 7,492 aftershocks as of Wednesday (26/8).

The data is based on an update as of 05.00 WIB. Of the thousands of aftershocks, the largest magnitude reached 6.2, while the smallest was recorded at 1.0.

“Total aftershocks: 7492,” BMKG wrote in its press release on Wednesday (26/8).

BMKG also recorded that 33 aftershocks had a magnitude above 5. Meanwhile, 143 tremors were felt directly by the public.

“Magnitude above 5: 33 (events),” BMKG wrote.

The series of earthquakes occurred after the main earthquake struck the NTT region. Its impact is still being felt by residents in several regencies, with the number of fatalities continuing to be updated.

To date, the total death toll from the earthquake in NTT stands at 103 people.

The breakdown is 41 people dead in Manggarai Regency, 34 in East Manggarai, 13 in Nagekeo, six in Sikka, five in Ngada, three in Ende, and one in West Manggarai.

In addition to the fatalities, the number of injured residents has also reached thousands. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded an additional 63 injured people.

“We received an additional figure of 63 injured people, bringing the total we have recorded to 1,666 people,” said Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, Acting Head of the Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre at BNPB, during a press conference broadcast on BNPB’s YouTube channel on Tuesday (25/8).
