BMKG Records 235 Aftershocks in NTT

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7 struck East Nusa Tenggara. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded 235 aftershock events in the NTT region. “Aftershock events. As of 14.00 WIB, there have been 235 aftershock activities with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 6.8. They are mainly located in the northern part of Flores Island,” said BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani during a press conference viewed on BNPB’s YouTube channel on Saturday (15/8/2026). He said aftershock activity generally decays gradually. The process could last for around two to three weeks. “On the right we can see a graph of the aftershocks. We have been monitoring and observing them hour by hour, and so far they have not yet decayed,” he explained. “Generally the decay will occur within two to three weeks, as with the recent earthquake in North Maluku. So it takes time for these aftershocks to decay after two or three weeks,” Faisal continued. Previously, BNPB recorded 38 people dead as a result of the magnitude 7 earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). BNPB also recorded two people with serious injuries and 11 people with minor injuries. “So the first affected victims are fatalities. As of 15.00 this afternoon, 38 people have been recorded dead,” said BNPB Head Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto during a press conference viewed on BNPB’s YouTube channel on Saturday (15/8/2026). “Then two people with serious injuries, 11 with minor injuries, and approximately 2,000 people have evacuated independently,” he continued.
