BMKG Records 1,624 Aftershocks in Flores, Activity Still Fluctuating

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that aftershock activity following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, is still ongoing. As of Monday (17/8/2026) at 12.00 WITA, a total of 1,624 aftershocks had been recorded in the region.

Head of the Kupang Geophysics Station, Arief Tyastama, detailed that the strength of the aftershocks varied considerably. The largest aftershock recorded reached magnitude 6.2, while the smallest was magnitude 1.3.

Arief explained that based on the decay graph, seismic activity in Flores currently still shows a fluctuating pattern. To date, a consistent downward trend in activity has not been clearly observed, so BMKG continues to conduct intensive monitoring.

“From the decay graph it is still fluctuating, the decay pattern is not yet clearly visible. It is estimated that within the next two to three weeks aftershock activity will begin to stabilise,” said Arief.

Amid the ongoing aftershock activity in Flores, a tectonic earthquake also struck Alor Regency on Monday (17/8/2026) at 12.20 WITA. The earthquake had a magnitude of 3.0 with its epicentre located at coordinates 9.64 South Latitude and 124.42 East Longitude, precisely 14 kilometres west of Alor at a depth of 6 kilometres.

BMKG stated that the Alor earthquake was a shallow earthquake triggered by active fault activity. Tremors were felt in the Alor area with an intensity scale of II-III MMI, which is analogous to the noticeable vibration when a heavily loaded truck passes by.

The public is urged to remain calm but alert to the potential for seismic fluctuations still occurring in the East Nusa Tenggara region.
