BMKG records 1,176 aftershocks in Central Sulawesi

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded 1,176 aftershocks since a major magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Central Sulawesi on Tuesday (16/6).

“From monitoring seismic activity until 21 June 2026, 1,176 aftershocks with varying intensities have been recorded,” said Djati Cipto Kuncoro, Head of the BMKG Class I Geophysics Station in Palu, when contacted on Sunday.

According to BMKG data, after the peak magnitude 6.7 quake, the highest frequency of aftershocks was at magnitude 5.3 and the lowest at magnitude 1.4.

BMKG also monitored around 49 aftershocks that were felt by residents, with parameters indicating depths of less than 10 kilometres.

“Aftershock activity may still occur. We continue to provide updates on seismic developments through official BMKG channels and government information channels,” he said.

He added that independent mitigation efforts also need to be enhanced to strengthen vigilance against adverse situations, as good mitigation can minimise the risks posed by earthquake impacts.

“Mitigation is a crucial part of facing disasters. Every individual must be able to manage themselves in critical situations, which is intended to avoid the risk of casualties,” Djati stated.

Data compiled by the Sigi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) shows that the number of damaged houses in the regency has now reached 2,335 units, comprising 1,955 lightly damaged houses, 226 moderately damaged houses, and 154 heavily damaged houses.
