BMKG: Rain Forecasted to Continue Across North Sumatra for the Coming Week

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts that numerous areas in North Sumatra are still potentially subject to moderate to heavy rainfall over the coming week.

Martha Rosefina, Head of the Meteorology Early Warning System Team, stated in a briefing received in Medan on Monday that potential rain cloud formation in North Sumatra is caused by wind deflection and wind convergence around the West Coast to the East Slopes of North Sumatra, alongside active atmospheric waves and warm Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies.

The convergence of air masses due to wind deflection in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, atmospheric wave activity, warm sea surface temperature anomalies, and an unstable air instability index fully support the growth of convective clouds in the North Sumatra region.

Weather in North Sumatra over the next week, according to Rosefina, will generally be dominated by moderate to very heavy rain conditions.

Areas potentially affected by rain include the regencies of Langkat, Binjai, Medan, Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai, Tebing Tinggi, Asahan, Batubara, Labuhanbatu, Labuhanbatu Utara, Labuhanbatu Selatan, Pakpak Bharat, Dairi, Karo, Humbang Hasundutan, Simalungun, and Pematang Siantar.

Similar conditions may also occur in Toba, Samosir, Tapanuli Selatan, Padang Sidempuan, Tapanuli Tengah, Sibolga, Tapanuli Utara, Padang Lawas, Padang Lawas Utara, Mandailing Natal, Gunung Sitoli, Nias, Nias Selatan, Nias Utara, and Nias Barat.

Regional heads are urged to coordinate with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), as well as local TNI and Polri, to continuously monitor information provided by BMKG via the @infobmkgsumut social media account.
