BMKG Predicts Peak of Dry Season in July-September, Highlights Affected Regions
BMKG predicts that the onset of the dry season in Indonesia will begin in June 2026, but its peak will occur in most regions of Indonesia in August 2026. BMKG has urged relevant parties to anticipate long-term policies for climate-affected sectors. “Regarding the peak of the dry season, most of Indonesia’s territory, covering 369 seasonal zones or 48.84% of Indonesia’s land area, is predicted to experience the peak of the dry season in August 2026,” said BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani during a press conference on Wednesday (10/6/2026). BMKG hopes this updated dry season prediction can serve as a further guide in strengthening mitigation and anticipation planning, as well as medium- to long-term policies for various climate-affected sectors. Deputy for Climatology at BMKG Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan stated that the peak of the 2026 dry season will generally occur in July 2026 across 83 seasonal zones, covering 12.26% of Indonesia’s land area. The majority of the peak dry season will occur in August, across 369 seasonal zones or 48.84% of Indonesia’s land area, and in September across 169 seasonal zones covering 25.41% of Indonesia’s land area. Regions predicted to experience the peak dry season in June include parts of Sumatra, small parts of Kalimantan, small parts of Java, southern East Nusa Tenggara, northern West Sulawesi, western Central Sulawesi, small parts of Maluku, southern Southwest Papua, central West Papua, and eastern Papua. Meanwhile, regions predicted to enter the peak dry season in August include central Sumatra, most of Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, parts of East Nusa Tenggara, parts of Kalimantan, parts of Sulawesi, parts of Maluku, southern North Maluku, and most of Papua Island. For September, regions predicted to enter the peak dry season include the Bangka Belitung Islands, most of South Sumatra, Lampung, a small part of Java, most of East Nusa Tenggara, southern Kalimantan, most of Sulawesi, parts of North Maluku, parts of Maluku, and central Papua Pegunungan. Furthermore, BMKG revealed that the duration of the 2026 dry season is predicted to be longer than normal in 437 seasonal zones. Meanwhile, 70 seasonal zones, or 8.32% of Indonesia’s land area, are predicted to have a dry season duration equal to normal. “The duration of the 2026 dry season is predicted to be longer, specifically in 437 seasonal zones covering 48.77% of Indonesia’s land area,” he said. Additionally, only 79 seasonal zones, or just 9.23% of Indonesia’s land area, are predicted to experience a dry season duration shorter than normal. BMKG stated that the updated dry season prediction indicates that the onset of the 2026 dry season in Indonesia is generally advanced or earlier compared to normal conditions. Meanwhile, rainfall during the 2026 dry period is generally predicted to be in the below-normal category or drier than normal conditions.
