BMKG Predicts Heavy Rain and Strong Winds in NTT, Residents Urged to Remain Vigilant
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station has issued an updated early warning for severe weather in parts of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), with the potential for heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday (25/7/2026). Several areas in NTT still face the potential for moderate to heavy intensity rain, which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds until midday. Based on the BMKG early warning update at 08:40 WITA, moderate to heavy rain is expected to begin around 09:10 WITA. “In Rote Ndao Regency, covering the districts of Rote Barat Laut, Lobalain, Rote Tengah, Pantai Baru, Rote Timur, Rote Selatan, Landu Leko, and surrounding areas. These conditions are expected to extend to the districts of Semau, Kupang Barat, Amarasi, Nekamese, Amarasi Barat, Amarasi Selatan, Amarasi Timur, Amabi Oefeto Timur, and Semau Selatan in Kupang Regency,” explained the Head of the El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station, Sti Nenot’ek, on Saturday. Additionally, rain is also likely to spread to South Central Timor Regency (TTS), namely the districts of Amanuban Selatan, Ki’e, Kuanfatu, Boking, Nunkolo, Kolbano, Kot Olin, Kualin, and Noebeba, then to the districts of Rote Barat Daya and Rote Barat in Rote Ndao Regency, as well as Alak District in Kupang City. “BMKG estimates that these conditions will persist until around 12:00 WITA, within the three-day early weather warning valid for 25-27 July 2026,” Sti said. The BMKG has set a warning status for the potential of moderate to heavy rain in Kupang Regency, South Central Timor, Malaka, and Rote Ndao on 25 July 2026. “Meanwhile, the potential for strong winds is forecast to occur in Kupang City, Kupang Regency, Rote Ndao, and Sabu Raijua until 27 July 2026,” Sti concluded. Sti explained that the weather phenomenon is influenced by the active Equatorial Rossby Wave, even though the NTT region has now entered the dry season. “The East Monsoon wind is now active, causing the dry season in the NTT region. However, an active Equatorial Rossby Wave has been detected, increasing the potential for light to moderate rain in several areas of NTT. The public also needs to be wary of dry, strong winds as they have the potential to trigger forest and land fires,” said Sti Nenot’ek. Meanwhile, for the weather forecast on Sunday, 26 July 2026, BMKG predicts morning conditions will generally be clear to cloudy. “Moving into the afternoon and evening, the weather will be dominated by clear cloudy to thick cloudy conditions with the potential for light rain in the Ende, Mbay, Bajawa, and Ruteng areas,” Sti detailed. He continued that at night the weather is forecast to be clear cloudy to thick cloudy, while in the early hours it will generally be clear to thick cloudy with the potential for fog in the Soe, Bajawa, and Ruteng areas. BMKG also estimates air temperatures in the NTT region to range from 18-31 degrees Celsius, while in Manggarai, Ngada, and parts of other highland areas it will range from 12-24 degrees Celsius. “Winds are blowing from the east to the south with speeds of 10-50 kilometres per hour,” Sti said. BMKG reminded the public to remain vigilant regarding the potential for strong winds in Kupang City, Kupang Regency, Rote Ndao, and Sabu Raijua.
