BMKG NTB issues warning for 1.9-metre tidal floods

Mataram (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning over the potential for coastal flooding (rob) that could hit coastal areas of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) from 26 July to 1 August 2026.

Head of the Zainuddin Abdul Madjid (ZAM) Meteorological Station, Satria Topan Primadi, said maximum sea tides reaching 1.9 metres could cause coastal flooding.

According to BMKG, the potential for high tides in coastal areas of West Lombok Regency will occur between 09.00 and 12.00 Central Indonesian Time (WITA), while high tides along the coast of Bima Regency will take place from 08.00 to 13.00 WITA.

Areas at potential risk of coastal flooding on Lombok Island include Ampenan, Sekarbela, Gerung, Lembar, Pemenang, Jerowaru, and Labuhan Lombok.

Meanwhile on Sumbawa Island, the potential impact of high tides could affect Sumbawa, Labuhan Badas, Palibelo, Woha, Bolo, Langgudu, Soromandi, Sape, Rasanae Barat, Hu’u, and Asakota.

The current high tide phenomenon is influenced by the gravitational pull of the full moon occurring on 29 July 2026. This astronomical phenomenon has been dubbed the Buck Moon.

The name was given because buck deer antlers emerge each year during the middle of the summer season in the Northern Hemisphere, which falls in July.

The distance between the Earth and the Moon during the Buck Moon will be 379,433 kilometres, with the full moon phase taking place at 22.35 WITA.

The Moon will remain above the horizon from sunset until dawn. After the full moon phase, moonrise times will gradually shift later into the night.
