The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has stated that over the coming week, a number of areas in North Sumatra still have the potential to be drenched by rain with light to heavy intensity due to wind shear and unstable air conditions, which support the formation of rain clouds. BBMKG Region I forecaster Irene Lestari Purba in Medan said on Tuesday that atmospheric wave activity is forecast to be active, and the presence of a shearline in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, along with still-warm sea surface temperatures, supports the formation of rain clouds. Sufficiently unstable air also supports the growth of convective clouds. From morning to afternoon, the weather is generally clear to partly cloudy, leading to an increase in air temperature and significant heating. This can trigger the growth of convective clouds in the afternoon to evening, accompanied by locally strong winds in several areas of North Sumatra over the coming week. She mentioned that areas with the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall include Pakpak Bharat, Dairi, Karo, Langkat, Binjai, Medan, Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai, Batubara, Asahan, and South Labuhanbatu. Similar conditions may also occur in Humbang Hasundutan, Toba, Samosir, Simalungun, Pematang Siantar, North Padang Lawas, South Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli, North Tapanuli, Mandailing Natal, Gunung Sitoli, Nias, South Nias, North Nias, and West Nias. Based on these factors, BMKG urges the public to always be vigilant and to take anticipatory steps so that daily activities can continue safely and smoothly. The public should always refer to information from BMKG and not readily trust weather information from unofficial sources.
