BMKG: No Tsunami Potential Following Earthquake Shaking Saringi Island, NTB
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) has stated that the earthquake shaking the Saringi Island area in West Nusa Tenggara on Wednesday morning does not have the potential to cause a tsunami. “Modelling results show that the earthquake does not have tsunami potential,” said Acting Director of Earthquakes and Tsunami at BMKG, Rahmat Triyono, in Jakarta on Wednesday. The magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred at 09:10 WIB with its epicentre in the sea at a depth of 485 kilometres. From coordinates 7.18° south latitude and 117.10° east longitude, or approximately 137 kilometres northeast of West Nusa Tenggara. Based on the epicentre location and hypocentre depth, the earthquake is classified as a deep-focus quake triggered by rock deformation activity within the Earth’s plates. Source mechanism analysis shows the earthquake has a downward movement pattern or normal fault. The earthquake vibrations were reported to be felt up to Badung Regency, Bali, with an intensity scale of II MMI, felt by some people and causing hanging light objects to sway. As of 09:30 WIB, BMKG has not detected any aftershock activity following the event.
