The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of potential light, moderate, and heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds across most major Indonesian cities on Monday, 1 June 2026.

According to BMKG’s official website, forecaster W. Annisa L explained that convergence zones extend from the North Natuna Sea to the South China Sea, the northern Pacific Ocean near Papua New Guinea, North Sumatra, Jambi to the Malacca Strait, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan to Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi to Central Sulawesi, North Maluku, and West Papua to Southwest Papua.

“These conditions are likely to enhance the development of rain clouds along the convergence or confluence zones,” Annisa said on 1 June 2026.

Several major cities are forecast to experience moderate to very heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds, including Serang, Bandung, Banjarmasin, Ternate, Ambon, and Nabire.

Other major cities are expected to have light to moderate rain, such as Banda Aceh, Medan, Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Selor, Samarinda, Palangkaraya, Mamuju, Palu, Gorontalo, Manado, Sorong, Manokwari, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Merauke.

Cities forecast to remain cloudy include Pekanbaru, Jambi, Pangkal Pinang, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Yogyakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, Pontianak, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, and Kendari.

On Saturday, 30 May 2026, BMKG warned maritime users of potential waves up to four metres in some sea areas, posing risks to national shipping safety.

Director of Maritime Meteorology Eko Prasetyo urged all maritime transport operators, ship captains, and traditional fishermen to observe safe operational limits for vessels between 30 May and 2 June 2026.

“The potential for high waves in these areas could jeopardise shipping safety,” he said.
