BMKG Maps Areas in Bali Prone to Drought During El Niño
The BMKG’s Region III Denpasar Climatology Station has mapped areas in Bali that are prone to drought during the El Niño phenomenon. Based on the mapping, one area frequently affected by drought during El Niño is Buleleng.
“If viewed from climatological data, the areas in Bali that are typically prone to drought are in the northern part of Bali, including western, northern, and eastern Buleleng,” said the Head of the BMKG Region III Denpasar Climatology Station, Aminudin Al Roniri, on Thursday (2/4/2026).
In addition to Buleleng, southern Bali areas are also at risk of drought due to El Niño. These include areas such as Badung in South Kuta, Klungkung in Nusa Penida, and southern Karangasem.
Aminudin also responded to the term “Godzilla El Niño” that has emerged in public discourse. According to him, the term was not issued by BMKG as a prediction for the 2026 dry season.
“However, we have stated that the 2026 dry season is predicted to be below normal due to the potential for a weak category El Niño forecasted to begin in May 2026,” Aminudin explained. Meanwhile, Aminudin said, the term “Godzilla El Niño” refers to a strong to very strong category El Niño.
Aminudin urged local governments to optimise the management of water resources, such as reservoirs, weirs, and dams. They should then conduct regular monitoring of river flows and water reserves, and prepare efficient irrigation water distribution strategies.
In addition, Aminudin urged the government to enhance preparedness for forest and land fires and strengthen coordination between agencies regarding drought risk management.
For the agricultural sector, they can adjust planting calendars to the dry season conditions. Then, optimise water-saving irrigation systems, use more drought-resistant crop varieties, and increase coordination among farmers, subak, and agricultural services.
“For the public, use water wisely and frugally in drought-prone areas, provide clean water reserves in drought-prone areas, do not carry out indiscriminate land or waste burning. Increase vigilance against high temperatures and drought potential,” Aminudin requested.
