BMKG Lifts Tsunami Warning Following Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake in Sangihe
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi, on Monday morning, 8 June 2026, causing significant anxiety among coastal residents. An early tsunami warning was issued immediately after the tremor, triggering high alert in areas near the earthquake’s epicentre.
However, several hours later, the situation began to stabilise after the BMKG announced that the tsunami warning status had been officially lifted. Although the tsunami threat has passed, the government and field officers are continuing the process of documenting the earthquake’s impact.
As of Monday afternoon, preliminary reports indicate that dozens of families have been affected and several buildings have sustained damage due to the tremors in Indonesia’s northern border region. After monitoring sea activity and seismic conditions, the BMKG confirmed that the tsunami warning previously in effect has been revoked.
Nevertheless, the public is urged to remain vigilant. The potential for aftershocks remains, and residents are advised to continuously follow official information from the BMKG, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), and local governments.
Based on preliminary data collected as of 12:30 WIB, 27 heads of households have been reported as affected by the earthquake. Of this number, 20 households are located in the Sangihe Islands Regency, while seven are in the Talaud Islands Regency.
In addition to the impact on residents, the earthquake caused damage to several buildings. It is recorded that 27 houses were damaged across the two regions. Beyond residential homes, several public facilities were also affected; two churches, one school, one teacher’s official residence, and one GMIM 76 building in the North Minahasa Regency were reported damaged.
The earthquake tremors were felt across various parts of North Sulawesi with varying intensities. Meanwhile, residents of the Talaud Islands Regency felt the quake in the Rainis District. In the North Minahasa Regency, vibrations were felt in the West Likupang District.
