BMKG Issues Weather Alert: 18 Regions at Risk of Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Today

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early weather warning for Saturday, 20 June 2026. Although parts of Indonesia are beginning to enter the dry season, the potential for moderate to heavy intensity rain is still forecast in a number of areas.

In its early weather warning for the period 19-21 June 2026, BMKG stated that several regions still have the chance of experiencing rain accompanied by strong winds due to the influence of still-active atmospheric dynamics. Two regions, North Sumatra and South Sulawesi, are categorised as ‘Siaga’ (Standby) because they have the potential to experience heavy to very heavy rain. However, BMKG confirmed that no areas are categorised as ‘Awas’ (Warning) or at risk of very heavy to extreme rain today.

BMKG forecasts that rain with moderate to heavy intensity is still likely to occur in a number of Indonesian regions. Areas categorised as ‘Waspada’ (Alert) for moderate to heavy rain include: Aceh, West Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, Bengkulu, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, and Maluku. Residents in these areas are urged to remain vigilant against the possibility of waterlogging, localised flooding, fallen trees, and disruptions to activities due to rain falling for a fairly long duration.

In addition to heavy rain, BMKG also highlighted the potential for strong winds in several areas. Regions at risk of experiencing strong winds include: Bangka Belitung Islands, Maluku, North Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and North Sulawesi. These conditions require attention, especially for fishermen, sea transport operators, and people active in open spaces.

Amid the ongoing potential for rain, BMKG stated that the number of Indonesian regions entering the dry season continues to increase in the third dekadal of June 2026. In general, rainfall during this year’s dry season is predicted to be in the below-normal category. This condition is expected to occur in most parts of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, and Papua.
