BMKG issues early warning for high waves in the Lombok Strait
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potential sea waves as high as four to six metres in the southern waters of the Lombok Strait, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
Ari Wibianto, Head of the Observation, Data, and Information Working Group at the Zainuddin Abdul Madjid (ZAM) Meteorological Station, stated that these high waves are expected to persist from 15 September 2026 for several days.
“Wave conditions will not be constant throughout the day and will follow wind movement patterns,” he said in Mataram on Monday.
Ari explained that the high waves are linked to the potential increase in wind speeds in the maritime area, influenced by a significant air pressure gradient between the high-pressure centre around Australia and the relatively lower pressure in the Asian region.
“This potential for high waves is predicted to continue for the next two to three days, before gradually decreasing,” Ari added.
Furthermore, he urged fishermen and maritime service users to increase vigilance regarding the potential for high waves emerging in the waters of West Nusa Tenggara.
Wind conditions, waves, and weather must always be a priority for fishermen and maritime users, who should adjust their sailing routes and timing according to sea conditions.
“Always monitor maritime weather information and BMKG ZAM early warnings before and during maritime activities,” Ari concluded.
