The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning regarding the potential for extreme weather in the North Sumatra region for Tuesday, 7 July 2026. The public is advised to be vigilant for moderate to heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

Forecaster from BBMKG Region I Medan, Endah Paramitha, explained that the areas most at risk include the mountainous regions, the eastern slopes, the west coast, and the western slopes of North Sumatra. This condition is triggered by a cyclonic circulation in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra.

“There is a cyclonic circulation forming wind bends in the North Sumatra region, supported by fairly unstable air conditions, which triggers convective processes and the formation of rain clouds,” said Endah in Medan on Monday (6/7).

Based on BMKG data, as of Monday evening at 20:20 WIB, validated data showed weather conditions in Madras Hulu, Medan Polonia, were observed to be thick cloudy with a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius. BMKG urged communities in disaster-prone areas to increase their preparedness to anticipate the impacts of the extreme weather.
