The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at the Hang Nadim Class I Meteorological Station in Batam has warned the public about the potential for localised rain in Batam City on Wednesday (10/6), amid weather conditions generally dominated by thick clouds from morning until evening.

A BMKG Hang Nadim forecaster explained that atmospheric conditions in the Riau Islands region, particularly Batam, remain quite unstable. This means the growth of rain clouds is still possible even though the weather generally appears cloudy.

“Overall, weather conditions in Batam are forecast to be cloudy to densely cloudy. However, there is still a chance of light rain that is localised and of short duration, especially during the morning to afternoon period,” the BMKG Hang Nadim forecaster stated on Wednesday (10/6).

BMKG noted that the potential localised rain is triggered by a combination of high air humidity and surface heating during the day, which can induce the formation of convective clouds. These types of clouds are known to develop rapidly and produce rain with light to moderate intensity in a short period.

Air temperatures in Batam are expected to range between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, with relative humidity potentially exceeding 80 per cent. This combination causes the air to feel humid and tend to be hot during the day, although it is overcast.

BMKG also emphasised that although any potential rain is localised, the public should remain alert to its impacts, particularly on outdoor activities, land traffic and shipping activities around Batam’s waters.

For the waters around Batam and the Riau Islands, wave conditions are forecast to be relatively low and still safe for small to medium-scale shipping activities. Nevertheless, transient rain can suddenly reduce visibility, which maritime transport users need to be aware of.

Furthermore, BMKG Hang Nadim urged the public to pay attention to regularly updated weather information, given that weather conditions in tropical areas like Batam can change rapidly within hours.

Given these conditions, BMKG stressed the importance of vigilance even though the weather generally appears relatively calm, as the potential for localised rain can still occur unevenly across several areas of Batam City throughout the day.
