BMKG forecasts rain in several North Sumatra regions on Saturday

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has stated that a number of regions in North Sumatra have the potential to be hit by light to moderate intensity rain on Saturday (25/7).

Forecaster from the Centre for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BBMKG) Region I, Budi Prasetyo, in Medan on Friday, said that the weather in North Sumatra on Saturday morning has the potential for light rain in the Langkat, North Labuhanbatu, South Nias, Central Tapanuli and surrounding areas.

During the afternoon to evening, there is potential for rain with light to moderate intensity in most parts of North Sumatra. Likewise, at night there is still potential for light intensity rain in the Nias Islands, east coast, eastern slopes and western slopes.

Meanwhile, in the early hours, he continued, there is potential for light rain in South Nias, South Labuhanbatu, Labuhanbatu, North Labuhanbatu, Mandailing Natal and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, BMKG forecaster from the Belawan Class II Maritime Meteorological Station, Dasmian Sulviani, said that from 25 to 27 July 2026, several North Sumatran waters have the potential to be hit by high waves.

The wind pattern in the northern Sumatra region generally moves from southeast to southwest with wind speeds ranging from 6 to 25 knots.

Waves as high as 2.5 to 4 metres are likely to occur in the Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands.

Fishermen using small boats are urged to be cautious if wind speeds reach 15 knots and wave heights reach 1.25 metres. Similarly, barge operators should be alert if wind speeds reach 16 knots and wave heights reach 1.5 metres. Ferry operators must also be vigilant if wind speeds reach 21 knots and wave heights reach 2.5 metres.
