The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts that Medan, Palembang and several other major cities in Indonesia have the potential to be hit by rain today, Sunday.

BMKG forecaster Sufia, in a weather information update broadcast monitored from Jakarta on Sunday, said the rain potential is triggered by atmospheric dynamics, including the formation of wind slowdown areas or convergence and wind confluence, which increase the growth of rain clouds.

“The combination of these atmospheric dynamics causes significant weather potential in several regions of Indonesia, so there is a need to increase preparedness for moderate to heavy rain potential,” she said.

Meanwhile, other western regions such as Banda Aceh, Pekanbaru, Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Samarinda and Banjarmasin are forecast to be partly cloudy to heavily overcast, with hazy conditions in Bandar Lampung, Pontianak and Palangkaraya.

For eastern Indonesia, light rain potential is forecast in Mamuju, Palu, Ambon, Manokwari and Jayapura.
