BMKG Forecasts Rain in Several Major Indonesian Cities on Friday
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts rain of varying intensity in several major cities across the country on Friday.
“We begin the Indonesian weather forecast with Sumatra. There is a possibility of light rain in Medan, Padang, Jambi, Tanjung Pinang and Pangkal Pinang,” BMKG forecaster Selly said in a weather forecast broadcast in Jakarta on Friday.
In addition to the light rain, BMKG urged the public to watch for possible thunderstorms in Bengkulu and thick cloud in Banda Aceh.
Elsewhere in Sumatra, haze is forecast in Pekanbaru and Palembang, while smoke or fog is possible in Bandar Lampung.
Moving to Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara, light rain is also forecast in Mataram.
Partly cloudy to heavily overcast conditions are possible in Jakarta, Serang, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya and Kupang, while haze is forecast specifically for Yogyakarta and Denpasar.
“We then move to Kalimantan. There is a possibility of moderate rain in Tanjung Selor, light rain in Pontianak, Palangkaraya and Samarinda, and haze in Banjarmasin,” Selly said.
Across Sulawesi, BMKG forecasts possible light rain in Mamuju, Palu, Gorontalo and Manado, while thick cloud is expected to predominate in Makassar and Kendari.
In eastern Indonesia, moderate rain is possible in Sorong, with light rain forecast in Ternate, Manokwari, Nabire and Merauke. Haze or smoke may affect Ambon, Jayawijaya and Jayapura.
BMKG has also issued a warning of waves 2.5 to 4 metres high in the Indian Ocean west of the Mentawai Islands through to Lampung. Possible tidal flooding has been flagged for coastal areas of the Riau Islands, Jakarta, West Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and Maluku.
Selly said the forecast provides a general overview of the day’s weather. For more detailed forecasts updated hourly, the public can use the Info BMKG app or follow the agency’s social media account, @infobmkg.
