BMKG Forecasts Rain in Most Major Indonesian Cities on Saturday

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) forecasts that most major cities in Indonesia will experience rain of varying intensity on Saturday (16 May 2026). The rain is also likely to be accompanied by lightning.

“In western Indonesia, there is a potential for thunderstorms in Palembang, Banjarmasin, and Samarinda,” said BMKG forecaster Afif in a weather forecast broadcast in Jakarta on Saturday.

BMKG also forecasts that several major cities in the same region will experience lower rainfall. Furthermore, he mentioned that there is a potential for moderate rain in the cities of Medan, Palangkaraya, and Tanjung Selor.

Meanwhile, light rain is expected to dominate most of the other western regions and the island of Java.

“There is also a potential for light rain in Padang, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Pangkalpinang, Bandar Lampung, all of Java, and Pontianak,” he added.

In addition to the potential for rain, residents in Banda Aceh are expected to experience cloudy weather. For other regions in Sumatra, BMKG stated that there is a potential for hazy conditions, which will specifically occur in the cities of Jambi and Bengkulu.

Moving on to monitoring the eastern part of Indonesia, BMKG also advises the public to be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in the areas of Manado and Jayawijaya.

“There is also a potential for moderate rain in Mamuju, Gorontalo, and Ternate,” he said, describing the weather conditions for the eastern region.

In conclusion, he detailed a number of cities in the central and eastern regions that have the potential to experience light rain, including Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Palu, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, and Merauke.
