Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning over the potential for light, moderate to heavy rain, which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, in various major cities across Indonesia on Friday.

Quoting BMKG’s official website in Jakarta, forecaster Sufia Nur explained that, in general, an elongated convergence area extends over the eastern coastal region of the Philippines, the eastern Philippine Sea, the northern Philippines, and the Sulu Sea.

These conditions are capable of increasing the potential for rain cloud growth along the areas traversed by the convergence or confluence.

Accordingly, the agency forecasts that only a few major cities face the potential for moderate to very heavy rain accompanied by thunder and strong winds, namely Pangkal Pinang and Tanjung Selor.

Meanwhile, several other major cities will experience light to moderate rain, namely Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Tanjung Pinang, Palembang, Banjarmasin, Mamuju, Palu, Gorontalo, and Nabire.

As for major cities forecast to experience only cloudy conditions today, these are Banda Aceh, Jambi, Bengkulu, Jakarta, Serang, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Pontianak, Palangka Raya, Samarinda, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Manado, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Merauke.
