BMKG Forecasts Rain from 9–12 September in Banten and Jakarta

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts rainfall from 9 to 12 September in areas affected by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

The downpours are expected to reduce the impact of the volcanic ash currently affecting a number of regions in Indonesia.

“We have been monitoring that around 9 to 12 September 2026 there is potential for clouds and light to moderate rain, particularly in areas affected by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau,” said BMKG head Teuku Faisal during a limited online meeting on natural disaster management on Monday (7/9).

Faisal said the agency would also coordinate with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to carry out air operations using Weather Modification Operations (OMC) in areas affected by volcanic ash distribution.

BMKG plans to conduct the OMC from Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung before it was eventually closed due to being affected by volcanic ash.

Meanwhile, options for carrying out the OMC are also planned at Kertajati Airport in Majalengka and Ahmad Yani Airport in Semarang.

According to Faisal, the OMC would be more effective if conducted from the Pondok Cabe Airport Post, Halim Perdanakusuma, and Kertajati, as these can reach West Java, Banten, and Jakarta, which have been affected by volcanic ash.

Faisal noted that the further the airport’s location from the Sunda Strait, the lower the effectiveness of the OMC. For example, if the OMC is carried out from Ahmad Yani Airport, the area receiving rainfall would only be eastern West Java.
