BMKG forecasts rain across North Sumatra, warns of high waves

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has stated that most of North Sumatra is likely to experience rain with light to moderate intensity on Sunday (26/7).

BMKG forecaster Utami Al Khairiyah in Medan said on Saturday that light rain is expected in the morning across Asahan, Dairi, Deli Serdang, Humbang Hasundutan, Karo, Labuhanbatu, South Labuhanbatu, North Labuhanbatu, Langkat, Mandailing Natal, Nias, West Nias, South Nias, North Nias, Padang Lawas Utara, Pakpak Bharat, Samosir, Serdang Bedagai, Simalungun, South Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli, North Tapanuli, Toba, Binjai, Gunungsitoli, Medan, Padangsidimpuan, and Sibolga.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rain is expected to dominate most of North Sumatra during the afternoon and evening.

Average temperatures are forecast to range from 13 to 33 degrees Celsius, with humidity between 60 and 100 percent. Winds are expected to blow from the west to the northeast at speeds of 3 to 15 kilometres per hour.

“The public is urged to remain alert for the potential of light to heavy rain that may still occur in the coming days, which could cause hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides,” she said.

Separately, BMKG forecaster Rizki Fadhillah Pratama Putra from the Class II Maritime Meteorological Station in Belawan stated that several North Sumatran waters are likely to be hit by high waves from 26 to 29 July 2026.

Wind patterns in northern Indonesia are generally moving from the southeast to the southwest at speeds of 8 to 30 knots, while in southern Indonesia, winds are generally moving from the east to the southeast at speeds of 8 to 25 knots.
