BMKG Forecasts Light to Moderate Rain Across South Sumatra

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast that light to moderate intensity rain could drench a number of areas in South Sumatra Province from 28 July to 31 July 2026. Alan Aslani, Head of the Analysis and Forecasting Team at BMKG South Sumatra, stated in Palembang on Monday that the conditions are driven by atmospheric dynamics in the region from 28 July to 3 August 2026, which show air mass flows dominated by easterly winds and supported by an active Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). Despite this, most of South Sumatra is still expected to experience low rainfall categories. The public is urged to remain vigilant regarding this downward trend in rainfall, as it could trigger an increase in the number of hotspots. As a preventive measure against forest and land fires, BMKG, together with the Ministry of Forestry, the Indonesian Air Force, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), PT. Rekayasa Atmosphere Indonesia (RAI), and other relevant stakeholders, is conducting Weather Modification Operations (OMC) in South Sumatra from 19 to 30 July 2026. BMKG has urged the public to maintain heightened awareness of the threat of hydrometeorological disasters and sudden weather changes.
