Jakarta (ANTARA) — Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts that light rain could occur in several major cities across the country on Sunday.

BMKG forecaster Nazmi Nariyah said in a weather forecast video monitored on the agency’s YouTube channel in Jakarta on Sunday morning that light rain was possible in Padang, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta and Makassar.

“Light rain is also possible in Pangkal Pinang, Bangka Belitung Islands; Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan; Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan; Manado, North Sulawesi; and a number of other cities,” Nazmi said.

BMKG also forecasts thunderstorms in Jayawijaya and Merauke, light rain in Ambon, Sorong, Nabire and Jayapura, thick cloud in Ternate, and smoke or fog in Manokwari.

Thunderstorms are also possible in Banda Aceh, Aceh; Medan, North Sumatra; Pekanbaru, Riau; Jambi; Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands; and Palembang, South Sumatra. Similar conditions are forecast for Tanjung Selor, North Kalimantan; Mamuju, West Sulawesi; Jayawijaya, Highland Papua; and Merauke, South Papua.

Thick cloud is also forecast in Bengkulu; Surabaya, East Java; Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara; and Ternate, North Maluku. Hazy conditions are possible in Serang, Banten; Jakarta; and Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara.

Smoke or fog is forecast in Bandar Lampung, Lampung; Denpasar, Bali; Pontianak, West Kalimantan; Samarinda, East Kalimantan; Palu, Central Sulawesi; Gorontalo; Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi; and Manokwari, West Papua.

BMKG urged fishermen and users of sea transport to be alert to waves of 2.5 to 4 metres that could occur in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh to Lampung and in the Indian Ocean south of Banten to southern East Nusa Tenggara.

Coastal communities in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Jakarta, West Java, Bali and West Nusa Tenggara were also advised to adjust their activities to tidal conditions because coastal flooding, or rob, is possible.

BMKG cautioned that although dry weather would remain dominant, moderate to heavy rain could occur locally. The public was also asked to remain alert to drought and forest and land fires, and to monitor the latest weather information through the agency’s official channels.
