Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast that heavy to very heavy rainfall has the potential to strike a number of regions across Indonesia on Monday.

BMKG forecaster Bintari, in a weather forecast broadcast monitored via the BMKG YouTube channel in Jakarta on Monday morning, said that heavy to very heavy rainfall could occur in Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Bangka Belitung, Lampung and Banten.

“Heavy and very heavy rain also has the potential to strike Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, North Sulawesi, Papua and Highland Papua,” she said.

BMKG urged the public to heighten their vigilance against the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall across a number of Indonesian regions in the coming period.

Furthermore, Bintari said BMKG forecast that moderate to heavy rainfall could also occur in several other regions marked under the alert category. Areas falling within this category include those in western Indonesia.

BMKG forecast the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Padang, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Yogyakarta and Banjarmasin.

“Meanwhile, moderate-intensity rain has the potential to occur in Medan, Bengkulu, Serang, Jakarta and Bandung,” she said.

Light rain is forecast to fall on Banda Aceh, Jambi, Pangkal Pinang, Semarang, Surabaya, Pontianak, Tanjung Selor, Samarinda and Palangkaraya.

For eastern Indonesia, moderate rainfall is forecast in Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate and Jayawijaya. Light rain is expected in Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Ambon, most of Sulawesi and the greater part of Papua.

BMKG urged the public to remain vigilant against the potential for extreme weather that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, as well as secondary impacts such as flooding, inundation and fallen trees.

The public was also reminded to regularly update weather information through the official BMKG website at www.bmkg.go.id or via social media @info.bmkg to obtain the latest and most accurate information.
