BMKG Faces Rp2 Trillion Budget Shortfall for 2027
The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatlaghy, and Geophysics (BMKG) has revealed that its budget requirements for 2027 are significantly higher than the ceiling established by the government. This situation leaves the agency facing a budget shortfall of more than Rp2 trillion.
According to its Strategic Plan (Renstra), BMKG’s budget requirement for 2027 reaches Rp4.65 trillion. Meanwhile, the budget ceiling prepared by the government is only Rp2.52 trillion.
“Regarding the 2027 budget backlog based on the Strategic Plan, BMKG’s budget needs for 2027 reach Rp4.649 trillion, whereas the available budget ceiling is Rp2.523 trillion. There is a backlog of Rp2.126 trillion, which consists of various operational needs, management support programmes, and non-operational activities for the MKG programme,” stated the Head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, during a meeting with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Tuesday (1/9/2026).
This budgetary constraint occurs at a time when BMKG must continue to provide meteorology, climatology, and geophysics services across Indonesia. Operational needs also include equipment maintenance and the strengthening of information systems and early warning mechanisms.
For 2027, BMKG’s ceiling of Rp2.523 trillion will be divided between management support programmes and meteorology, climatology, and geophysics programmes. The funding structure also draws from several sources, with the State Budget (Rupiah Murni) being the largest contributor.
“With the 2027 budget ceiling of 2.523 trillion, we will optimise it to maintain operations, strengthen BMKG infrastructure, maintain operational equipment, and improve the quality of information and early warnings. Furthermore, we greatly hope for support in addressing the 2027 budget backlog to ensure the continuity and quality of MKG services to the public,” he said.
Several infrastructure requirements have been included in the 2027 budget usage plan. One of these is infrastructure strengthening through foreign loans, including the construction of radar, marine observation, satellites, and coastal flood early warning systems.
Additionally, BMKG has prepared an SBSN (State Sukuk Infrastructure Bond) budget of Rp273.89 billion for various service building infrastructure developments. The plan includes the construction of three C-Band radars and one X-Band maritime radar.
“The SBSN funds of 273.89 billion are for various activities, primarily the construction of service building infrastructure in 20 locations. Most importantly, this includes the construction of 3 C-Band radar units in Bali, Aceh, and Padang, and 1 X-Band maritime radar unit in Manado,” said Faisal.
