BMKG Explains Rain in Jakarta After Weeks of Dry Spell

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has provided an explanation for the rain that fell in Jakarta after several weeks of dry weather, noting the potential for further rainfall in the coming days. “In the next three days, the potential for rain in the Jakarta area tends to decrease compared to today’s conditions,” said Ida Pramuwardani, Acting Director of Public Meteorology at BMKG, on Wednesday (5/8/2026). She explained that relatively moist conditions were present at the 850-500 millibar layer, leading to the potential for rain cloud growth in the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek). “From global and regional weather factors, there are no supporting factors for convective cloud growth,” Ida stated. “From local weather factors, the relatively moist conditions at the 850-500 mb layer, unstable atmospheric conditions, and strong convective potential support the growth of rain clouds in Jabodetabek,” she added. Ida also mentioned ongoing weather modification operations (OMC) in West Java, which are being conducted to anticipate drought in the Citarum River Basin (DAS). Heavy rain was previously observed in parts of Jakarta, including the Cawang area in East Jakarta, where streets became suddenly wet and station roofs channelled water onto railway platforms. Heavy rain also fell in the Kebayoran area of South Jakarta, worsening traffic congestion around Kebayoran Baru Station and along Jalan Sultan Iskandar Muda near Gandaria City. Areas outside the capital, including Depok and Bojonggede in Bogor, also experienced rainfall.
