The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Bandung Geophysical Station Class I has predicted the El Niño phenomenon still has the potential to reduce rainfall intensity in parts of West Java over the coming week, from 9 to 15 June 2026. Head of BMKG Bandung, Edi Wibowo, stated that based on the latest global climate analysis, the El Niño phenomenon indicated by a Niño 3.4 index of +0.69 and a Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) of -18.9 is still influencing rainfall patterns in West Java. “The El Niño phenomenon still has the potential to reduce rainfall in parts of Indonesia, including West Java. Meanwhile, the influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on the Indonesian region is forecast to be insignificant over the next week,” Edi said in Bandung on Tuesday. Nonetheless, BMKG noted the potential for light to moderate intensity rain can still occur locally, especially in the late afternoon to evening in a number of West Java areas. Edi said his office also issued several recommendations to the public and local governments regarding the potential for hydrometeorological disasters, such as flooding, landslides, and fallen trees. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and to update official weather information from BMKG. Understand the potential for disasters in the surrounding environment and immediately take risk reduction measures,” he said. He explained that during the current seasonal transition period, the public needs to increase awareness of the potential for extreme weather that can occur suddenly, such as heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning strikes. “The public is expected to recognise the potential for disasters in their environment and begin to understand how to reduce the risk of these disasters, for example by not littering, working together to maintain cleanliness and managing the surrounding environment,” Edi said. BMKG stressed that although the rainfall trend in West Java tends to decrease due to the influence of El Niño, the potential for extreme weather in the form of heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds still needs to be watched out for in the coming days.
