BMKG deploys survey team and microseismic testing after M7.7 earthquake in NTT

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has deployed a joint team to carry out macroseismic surveys, test soil response characteristics, and verify tsunami impacts following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake off Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis Wijayanto said in Jakarta on Tuesday that soil characteristics were being tested through microtremor measurements and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) in affected areas.

“The team from BMKG headquarters and technical implementation units is conducting a damaging earthquake survey, including macroseismic survey, microtremor and MASW measurements, to determine soil characteristics and response to shaking, monitor aftershocks, and verify tsunami impacts in the field,” he said.

He explained that the results of the technical mapping would be projected as a basis for disaster micro-zonation mapping, as well as the main foundation for preparing recommendations for earthquake-safe spatial and building reconstruction for local governments and communities.

In addition to geological studies, BMKG recorded that as of Monday (17/8) at 11.00 WIB, 1,624 aftershocks had occurred following the main earthquake, with 23 events above magnitude 5.0 and 59 events felt by residents.

Nevertheless, Wijayanto urged the public, particularly residents in Flores and surrounding areas, to remain calm, avoid cracked buildings, and always access updated disaster information through official BMKG communication channels as a basis for preparedness.
