BMKG Denies Rumours of 2026 Megathrust Earthquake Prediction
Rumours have emerged on social media regarding a prediction of a megathrust earthquake in 2026. BMKG has affirmed that this information is untrue or a hoax.
“The information is incorrect,” BMKG wrote on its official account on Wednesday (25 June 2026).
The hoax claims that ‘BMKG predicts a major megathrust earthquake will occur throughout the Indonesian archipelago in 2026’. The image also states ‘Disaster Alert 2026’.
BMKG has affirmed that it has never issued a prediction regarding the timing of an earthquake. BMKG stated that science and technology are not yet capable of accurately predicting when, where, and how strong an earthquake will be.
“BMKG routinely monitors seismic activity, studies potential earthquake sources, and provides official data-based information,” BMKG wrote.
It was stated that the assessment of potential is not a prediction of when an event will occur. BMKG said that information on potential earthquakes aims to increase awareness, not cause panic.
“Do not easily believe information that does not come from official channels,” BMKG wrote.
