BMKG Continues to Monitor Sea Levels During Anak Krakatau Eruption

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is continuously monitoring sea levels during the eruption phase of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait. Monitoring has been underway for several days. “BMKG continues to monitor sea level activity due to the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau. We have been monitoring it for several days now,” said BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Wijayanto, to reporters on Thursday (9/7/2026). Based on provisional monitoring results, no significant activity has been observed as a result of the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption. He stated there has been no rise in sea level. “To date, there has been no significant activity. There has been no anomaly in sea level rise due to the eruption from the equipment monitored by BMKG,” he said. Wijayanto stated that the impact of volcanic ash from the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption is localised. The impact of volcanic ash dispersion can reduce visibility and affect aviation and shipping activities. “In general, the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau does not directly affect the weather on a broad scale, so the impacts to be wary of are more localised, especially the spread of volcanic ash. This condition is influenced by wind direction and speed, which can reduce visibility, affect air quality, and potentially disrupt flight and shipping activities. BMKG continues to monitor atmospheric conditions to anticipate the potential spread of volcanic ash,” he said. Furthermore, Wijayanto conveyed that the volcanic ash from the eruption is predominantly heading towards Lampung Province. However, to date, the volcanic ash emitted is not very high and has not yet reached Lampung. “The weak wind is predominantly towards the Northwest or towards Lampung. The smoke is also not high, likely not reaching Lampung as it has already fallen into the sea,” he added. Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait experienced three eruptions on Wednesday (8/7) morning. The latest eruption occurred with an ash column height of 100 metres. According to PVMBG data, the first eruption occurred at 08.42 WIB, the second at 09.35 WIB, and the third at 09.54 WIB, with the observed column height approximately 100 metres above the peak, or roughly 257 metres above sea level. “The observed ash column was black with thick intensity leaning towards the northwest,” PVMBG wrote in its statement. Currently, Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III (Alert) status. PVMBG recommends that the public not approach the peak of Mount Anak Krakatau within a 3-kilometre radius.
