The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potential coastal flooding (rob) affecting several sub-districts in Medan, North Sumatra, which may occur from 18 to 22 February 2026.

Head of the Belawan Maritime Meteorological Station, Nur Alim, said on Monday that high tide activity and other natural phenomena could contribute to coastal flooding. Residents along Medan's coastline have been urged to remain vigilant against the potential for tidal flooding during this period, which may inundate coastal areas of Medan Belawan, Medan Labuhan and Medan Marelan sub-districts.

The agency has predicted sea tides exceeding 2.3 metres from 18 to 22 February 2026, occurring between 02:00-04:00 and 14:00-17:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), with the highest tide reaching 2.6 metres. The height is measured from the Lowest Astronomical Tides (LAT) reference point.

The conditions could disrupt transportation around ports and coastal areas, community activities, as well as loading and unloading operations at ports.

"The public is urged to remain vigilant and prepared to anticipate the impact of coastal flooding and to monitor maritime weather updates from BMKG," said Nur Alim.

Regarding sea waves, several waters in North Sumatra face the potential for waves reaching 1.25 to 2.5 metres, including in the western waters of North Sumatra, western waters of the Nias Islands, western waters of the Batu Islands, eastern waters of the Nias Islands, waters around the Batu Islands, and the Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands.

Wind patterns in northern Indonesia are generally moving from the northeast to east at speeds ranging from 5 to 30 knots, whilst in southern Indonesia winds are generally moving from the west to northwest at speeds ranging from 6 to 30 knots.
