BMKG Bandung Predicts El Niño Peak in West Java for September-October 2026
The Bandung Class I Geophysics Station of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that the peak of the dry season in West Java, as an impact of the El Niño phenomenon, will occur from early September to October 2026. Local governments are urged to immediately strengthen clean water reserves to face this period of extreme dryness.
The Head of the Bandung Class I Geophysics Station, Suaidi Ahadi, revealed that the intensity of this year’s El Niño is considered very strong. He noted that the characteristics of this phenomenon bear similarities to the major El Niño that hit Indonesia during the 1997-1998 period.
“The peak of the dry season will occur from the beginning of September until October,” said Suaidi in his statement.
The extreme dry conditions caused by this strong El Niño are expected to gradually end by November 2026. During that period, rainfall is predicted to begin falling gradually across several regions in West Java.
Suaidi explained that the impacts of drought are already being felt in several parts of West Java. Based on monitoring, areas such as Bogor Regency, Garut, Sukabumi, and Bekasi have reported difficulties in accessing clean water.
Local governments in these areas have undertaken various mitigation efforts to meet the basic needs of the community. Specifically in Bogor Regency, Suaidi noted that the distribution of clean water supplies has reached approximately 7 to 9 million litres.
BMKG continues to conduct intensive monitoring of sea surface temperature movements and wind patterns to provide the latest information regarding the duration and intensity of El Niño in West Java and its surrounding areas.
