BMKG: Alert for potential rain accompanied by strong winds in North Sumatra today

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned the public and stakeholders to be alert to the potential for rain accompanied by strong winds in parts of North Sumatra.

BMKG Region I Forecaster Christin Mori in Medan stated on Monday that light to moderate rainfall is still likely to occur in several areas of North Sumatra on Monday afternoon and evening. This rainfall must be monitored closely as it may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, which could trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as flooding and landslides.

‘Be alert for moderate intensity rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in the mountainous areas, eastern slopes, and the eastern and western coasts of North Sumatra,’ she said.

During the afternoon, cloudy conditions are expected with the potential for light to moderate rain in several areas, with moderate intensity rain specifically possible in the Langkat region and its surroundings. In the evening, light to moderate rain remains a possibility for Langkat, Medan, and Deli Serdang. By the early hours of the morning, cloudy skies with the potential for light rain are expected across the entire North Sumatra region.

Temperatures on Monday are expected to average between 16 and 33 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels ranging from 72 to 99 per cent, and winds blowing from east to west at speeds of 3-8 km/h.
