The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has reminded residents to remain vigilant over potential rainfall in North Sumatra’s mountainous regions that could cause floods and landslides on Monday, 16 March.

“Be alert for potential medium-intensity rainfall in the mountainous and western slope regions of North Sumatra that could cause hydrometeorological disasters in the form of floods and landslides,” said BMKG Region 1 weather forecaster Christin Mori in Medan on Sunday.

He stated that in general, weather conditions in North Sumatra on Monday would be cloudy with potential light to medium-intensity rainfall in several areas.

In the morning, skies would be cloudy with potential light rainfall in Serdang Bedagai, Nias, North Nias, Batubara, Deli Serdang, Gunungsitoli, and Medan.

Meanwhile, at night, conditions would remain cloudy with potential light to medium rainfall in North Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli, Humbang Hasundutan, Toba and surrounding areas.

BMKG Maritime Class II Meteorological Station Belawan forecaster Indah Riandiny Puteri stated that several waters off North Sumatra still had the potential to be struck by high waves until 19 March.

Wave heights of 1.25 to 2.5 metres are expected to occur in waters west of the Nias Islands, waters west of the Batu Islands, waters of the Batu Islands, and the Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands.

Fishermen using small boats are urged to remain alert if wind speeds reach 15 knots and wave heights reach 1.25 metres. Similarly, barge operators should exercise caution if wind speeds reach 15 knots and wave heights reach 1.5 metres.
