Manado – The Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) forecasts extreme weather potential across municipalities and regencies in North Sulawesi until Sunday, 8 March.

“Alert for moderate to heavy rainfall that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, as well as increased accumulation of daily rainfall,” said Karina Husna, Operational Field Coordinator of the Sam Ratulangi Meteorological Station in Manado, on Monday.

Husna explained that generally, sea surface temperature anomalies ranging from 0.50 to 1.5 degrees Celsius in North Sulawesi waters have the potential to increase atmospheric moisture mass.

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon and low-frequency waves are forecast to contribute to cloud formation in North Sulawesi. Wind shifts and convergence are also expected to cause the accumulation of atmospheric moisture and support the development of rain clouds. Meanwhile, strong local instability indices are supporting the growth of convective clouds in several areas.
