BMKG: Aceh at Risk of Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Banda Aceh (ANTARA) - The Class I Sultan Iskandar Muda Meteorological Station of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has forecast that several areas in Aceh are at risk of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds over the next two days.

“Several areas in Aceh have the potential for moderate to heavy rain which may be accompanied by strong winds until May 19, 2026,” said BMKG Aceh forecaster, Muhammad Niza Andria, in Banda Aceh, Sunday.

He mentioned that the areas at risk of heavy rain and strong winds include Aceh Tengah Regency and Aceh Tenggara Regency today. Then, on Monday (May 18), heavy rain and strong winds are forecast to hit West Aceh Regency, South Aceh Regency, Aceh Singkil Regency and Aceh Tenggara Regency. Furthermore, on Tuesday (May 19), the areas at risk are Aceh Singkil, Aceh Tamiang, East Aceh, Langsa, Simeulue and Sabang City.

The condition is caused by wind shear and convergence zones, as well as warm sea surface temperatures in the waters west and east of Sumatra, which can increase the potential for evaporation (increasing water vapor mass).

In addition, M Niza explained that the weather in Aceh over the next few days is forecast to be cloudy in the morning. Then, there is a potential for rain with light to moderate intensity in the late afternoon to evening in Aceh Singkil, Simeulue, Gayo Lues, Aceh Tenggara, South Aceh and West Aceh.

Strong winds are also likely to occur during the day towards the afternoon in the areas of Aceh Besar Regency, Banda Aceh City, Sabang and its surroundings.

“Be aware of rain that occurs with moderate to heavy intensity and suddenly in the late afternoon or evening. This is due to intense heating that occurs during the day,” he said.

On this occasion, BMKG appealed to the people of Aceh to remain vigilant about hydrometeorological disasters.

“Always be careful when carrying out activities outdoors, especially when driving in bad weather which may be accompanied by strong winds, floods and landslides,” said M Niza Andria.
