A magnitude 7.4 earthquake rocked the east coast of Honshu, Japan. BMKG has assured that this major quake does not pose a tsunami risk to Indonesian territory. The earthquake occurred at 14:52 WIB in Japan. BMKG’s analysis indicates the quake was located at coordinates 39.92° N and 142.88° E at a depth of 10 km. “Based on the analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), this earthquake does not have the potential to generate a tsunami in Indonesian territory,” stated Acting Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, Rahmat Triyono, in his statement on Monday (20/4/2026). Based on the epicentre location and hypocentre depth, this is a shallow earthquake caused by subduction activity between the Pacific Plate and the Okhotsk Plate. The earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued early tsunami warnings for the central Pacific coast of Hokkaido, the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture, and Iwate Prefecture with AWAS status, as well as the eastern and western Pacific coasts of Hokkaido, the Sea of Japan coast in Aomori Prefecture, and Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures with SIAGA status. Preliminary monitoring by BMKG via sea level sensors detected a tsunami height of 60 cm in Miyako at 15:30 WIB. BMKG will continue to monitor the development of this earthquake’s impacts. “Coastal communities in Indonesian territory are urged to remain calm,” said Rahmat.
