BMG installs digital seismograph

YOGYAKARTA: The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) is installing a digital seismograph in Gamping subdistrict, Sleman regency, Yogyakarta, to widen the agency's earthquake monitoring coverage.

"The equipment will be ready for operation in a week's time," said Masturyono, the BMG's head of instrumentation and calibration, here on Sunday.

The device, in addition to a conventional one installed in the city, is expected to be capable of detecting earthquakes between 300 kilometers and 400 kilometers from the station.

The digital device is being installed in Yogyakarta because the province is prone to earthquakes. -- JP
