Bluesky Faces Decline in Active Users Amid Expansion Focus
The decentralised social network Bluesky is reported to be facing a decline in its number of active users while the company focuses on expansion projects outside the app.
TechCrunch on Tuesday (11/8) cited data from digital intelligence service provider Similarweb showing that Bluesky’s mobile app recorded 10.4 million monthly active users globally in June 2026, down 27.2 percent from the same period the previous year.
According to Similarweb data, the number of daily active users of the app on mobile devices in July 2026 also fell 25.6 percent to around three million.
This decline indicates that although the number of registered accounts on the Bluesky app continues to grow, fewer people are using the mobile app regularly.
The Bluesky app has lost more than half of its monthly active users compared with the app’s peak user figures at the end of 2024.
Similarweb data shows that the average monthly active users of the Bluesky app, which reached around 22.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2024, fell by around 52 percent to 10.7 million in the second quarter of 2026.
Bluesky is focusing more on developing its underlying protocol, AT Proto, so that it can support more applications, services and social communities.
Projects such as BlackSky and Eurosky are being developed, while several AT Proto-based applications such as the video-focused Skylight are beginning to receive positive early reception.
In addition, the company has launched an AI-based research tool named Attie and is now developing support for private data on Bluesky.
Support for private data has the potential to attract new interest from users who are less interested in open public spaces and more interested in private networks and communities.
