Blueray Boss Sentenced to Two Years in Customs Bribery Case
The Jakarta Corruption Court has sentenced John Field, a senior figure at Blueray Cargo (Group), to two years in prison for bribery. The panel of judges also imposed a fine of Rp300 million, with a subsidiary sentence of 100 days imprisonment. The verdict was read out at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Friday.
In addition to John Field, the judges handed down guilty verdicts to two other defendants: Dedy Kurniawan Sukolo, the Operational Manager of Custom Clearance at Blueray Cargo (Group), and Andri, the Head of the Import Documentation Team at the same company. Both were sentenced to 1.5 years in prison and fined Rp200 million each, with a subsidiary sentence of 80 days imprisonment. The three defendants accepted the verdict, while KPK prosecutors stated they would consider their options over the next seven days.
The sentence was lighter than the prosecution’s demand, which had sought a three-year prison term for John Field. According to the indictment, the three defendants bribed several officials at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise with a total of Rp61 billion in cash, along with entertainment and luxury goods valued at Rp1.8 billion.
The recipients of the bribes included the Director of Enforcement and Investigation, Rizal; the Sub-Director of Intelligence for Enforcement and Investigation, Sisprian Subiaksono; and the Head of Customs Intelligence Section I at the Directorate of Enforcement and Investigation, Orlando Hamonangan. Rizal allegedly received Rp14 billion, Sisprian Rp7 billion, and Orlando approximately Rp4.05 billion. The remaining funds were distributed to other parties who have not yet been prosecuted, including the Head of Import Enforcement Section I, Enov Puji Wijanarko. The non-cash gratuities included entertainment worth Rp1.45 billion, a Tag Heuer watch worth Rp65 million for Orlando, and a Mazda CX-5 car worth Rp330 million for Enov Puji Wijanarko. The bribes were intended to ensure that Blueray Cargo’s imported goods were cleared more quickly through customs supervision.
