Blue Stream Attacked: Will Putin and Erdogan Draw Closer?

A drone attack on the Blue Stream facility has not cut off Russian gas flows to Turkey. However, the incident has touched a far more sensitive diplomatic nerve: the relationship between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Moscow immediately turned to Ankara. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia hopes Turkey and other countries will use their influence to warn Kiev against attacking global energy facilities.

The statement was made after Gazprom reported a drone attack on the Krasnodarskaya compressor station, which is part of the Russian gas supply chain to Turkey via the Blue Stream pipeline. Gazprom stated the attack occurred on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, at 19:51 Moscow time. The Russian energy company said swift action successfully prevented disruption to gas supplies to Turkey, although repairs to the damaged facility are still ongoing.

Technically, the pipeline continues to flow. Politically, Moscow’s message is clear: an attack on Blue Stream is not just a matter between Russia and Ukraine, but also concerns Turkey’s interests.

This is where Erdogan’s position becomes crucial. Turkey is a NATO member, yet continues to purchase Russian energy. Turkey supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity, yet keeps communication channels open with Putin. Turkey sells defence capabilities to Kiev, but also remains an important partner for Moscow in energy, trade, the Black Sea, and nuclear projects.

For Putin, Erdogan is not a leader who is always aligned with him. However, Erdogan is one of the few NATO leaders with whom Moscow can still negotiate directly. The Blue Stream attack reinforces this position. Ukraine launched a major drone attack against Russian infrastructure, including three oil refineries, several tankers in the Sea of Azov, and a pipeline pumping station.
