Blok M Area to be Transformed, Pramono Targets Groundbreaking Next Week
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has revealed the progress regarding the redevelopment of the Blok M area in South Jakarta, stating that the groundbreaking ceremony for the area’s transformation is imminent.
Pramono noted that the Jakarta Provincial Government, through PT MRT Jakarta, will collaborate with a private developer to redevelop the district. The design for the Blok M redevelopment has already been presented in meetings and has received official approval.
“It is being done in a planned manner, and the Jakarta Provincial Government, through MRT, will enter into a partnership with a major developer. The design was presented in a meeting yesterday, and as Governor, I have granted my approval,” Pramly said at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (1/10/2026).
Pramono mentioned that the groundbreaking for the Blok M redevelopment is targeted for the near future, estimating it could take place this week or next.
“Hopefully, either this week or next week, we will begin the groundbreaking for that,” he added.
According to Pramono, the redevelopment is expected to make the Blok M area more organised and well-planned. Furthermore, he hopes the urban renewal will yield positive economic impacts.
“As a result, Blok M will become a more orderly, structured, and planned area, and hopefully, it will bring economic improvements to the district,” he said.
Pramono stated that the Blok M redevelopment is part of a broader plan to develop several areas in Jakarta. Following Blok M, the Provincial Government will focus on revitalising the Pasar Baru, Glodok-Pancoran, and Kota Tua areas.
“Because after Blok M, we will immediately concentrate on Pasar Baru, Glodok-Pancoran, and finally, Kota Tua,” he said.
These four areas are targeted to become new hubs for Jakarta, specifically to support tourism.
“So that all these places become new hubs for Jakarta to welcome tourists who wish to visit the city,” he concluded.
Previously, it was reported that PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) plans to develop the Blok M area towards the ‘Ultimate Development Blok M’ concept. Several changes are being prepared to turn Blok M into a more integrated and vibrant mixed-use zone.
M Iqbal Bimo Arifianto, Division Head of Property Management at MRT Jakarta, stated that the transformation of the Blok M area into the ‘Blok M Hub’ began in 2025. The area is being revitalised through collaboration with various stakeholders.
Currently, Blok M has evolved into a centre for MSME culinary delights, lifestyle, and various community activities. MRT Jakarta projects that daily visitors to the area have reached 25,000 people after more than 100 days of activation.
In line with this potential and the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) roadmap, Bimo said MRT Jakarta plans to move Blok M towards the ‘Ultimate Development Blok M’ concept.
“This is about how it transforms; wait for the main event, as it will be a major revitalisation. This is a major revitalisation to ensure Blok M can grow and the TOD becomes even more comfortable,” said Bimo during the MRT Fellowship 2026 Workshop at JB Tower, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (24/9/2026).
Under this development concept, MRT Jakarta is applying the ‘3A 1C’ approach, which stands for accessibility, amenities, attraction, and community. This approach includes strengthening pedestrian and transport connectivity, providing facilities and public spaces, activating various activities in the area, and collaborating with communities.
Providing a preview, Bimo mentioned that the area will eventually be transformed into a mixed-use zone that is increasingly integrated with apartments, hotels, and commercial areas. The concept is also aimed at making Blok M a model for a modern terminal that prioritises pedestrians.
The development of this area is also part of MRT Jakarta’s strategy to optimise assets owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government for the development of TOD-based areas around transport nodes.
