Blocked by YouTube: The Fate of Videos Created by Child and Teenage Indonesian YouTubers

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - YouTube has finally followed Indonesia’s rules on restricting accounts for users aged 16 years. Google has also updated YouTube’s Community Guidelines regarding users in Indonesia.

In the Google Support page, YouTube states it will update the minimum age requirements in line with the provisions of PP Tunas applicable in Indonesia. Accounts falling into this category may be deactivated.

“YouTube will update its minimum age requirements in accordance with the PP Tunas provisions. If you are under 16 years old in Indonesia, access to your YouTube account may be deactivated,” YouTube writes.

YouTube assures it will provide information and updates before the impact is felt by users.

“We recognise that changing the minimum age to access YouTube has important implications for users, and we will ensure users receive adequate information and updates before any impact on their YouTube access in the coming months,” YouTube explains.

YouTube also expresses its commitment to complying with applicable legal obligations under PP Tunas. It will gradually take the necessary and relevant steps during the transition period.

The page also includes instructions on how to download and delete data and content. For users who do not download their data and content, it will be available again when they turn 16.

“Even if you do not download your data and content, that data and content will be available to you again when you turn 16,” the notice states.

Here is how to download and delete data and content on YouTube:

Download Data and Content

• Open Google Takeout.

• In the “CREATE NEW EXPORT” section, tick the YouTube and YouTube Music box.

• Select Next Step.

• Fill in the “Choose file type, frequency & destination” form.

• Select Create Export.

Delete Data and Content

• Open myaccount.google.com/youtubeoptions.

• Select I want to permanently delete content.

• Select the appropriate option for you.

• Select Delete my content.

Meanwhile, Danny Ardianto, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for YouTube Asia Pacific, explained that the implementation process of the rules, including reactivating accounts for children under 16, is still ongoing. Details on this will also be conveyed to Komdigi.

The company also did not specify how many accounts are affected or how long the rule implementation will take.

“This is ongoing as per our implementation plan. So in the near future, there will be new updates,” Danny said during a press conference at the Komdigi office on Wednesday (22/4/2026).
